Biography
Akihito, born on December 23, 1933, was the 125th Emperor of Japan. His reign lasted from January 7, 1989, until he stepped down on April 30, 2019, ending the Heisei era. As the eldest son of Emperor Hirohito and Empress Kōjun, he became the crown prince in 1952 after his Coming-of-Age ceremony. Throughout his 30-year reign, Akihito worked to modernize the imperial family and make it more relatable to the Japanese people. Besides fulfilling his royal duties, he was a dedicated scientific researcher in ichthyology and marine biology, contributing greatly to the knowledge of Japanese fish species.
Akihito graduated from Gakushuin University in 1956 with a focus on political science and natural sciences. He married Michiko Shōda in April 1959, breaking tradition as she was a commoner. Their wedding was the first imperial ceremony broadcast on TV in Japan, watched by about 15 million people. They had three children: Naruhito, Fumihito, and Sayako. As emperor, Akihito visited all 47 prefectures of Japan and many remote islands, showing his commitment to connecting with people throughout the country.
In his scientific career, Akihito published many papers on fish taxonomy and marine ecosystems, especially on gobioid fishes. His research gained international recognition, and he often took part in ichthyological conferences and research projects. This combination of being a monarch and an active researcher was unique among modern emperors, highlighting his interest in natural sciences and conservation.
During his reign, Akihito faced several challenges, such as the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami in 2011, to which he responded with public messages of support for those affected. His decision to abdicate in 2019, citing health and age, made him the first Japanese emperor in over two centuries to step down voluntarily. He became Emperor Emeritus and was succeeded by his elder son, Naruhito, marking the start of the Reiwa era. At 92, Akihito is the longest-lived verifiable Japanese emperor in recorded history.
Before Fame
Akihito's early years were influenced by World War II, when he and his classmates were evacuated from Tokyo to Nikkō for safety until Japan surrendered in 1945. At Gakushuin University, he studied both political science and natural sciences, which sparked his lifelong interest in marine biology and ichthyology. His rise to prominence began when he became crown prince in 1952, and he first represented Japan on the international stage at Queen Elizabeth II's coronation in London in 1953.
After the war, Japan saw opportunities for modernizing the imperial family, and Akihito's generation was expected to connect more with citizens while keeping up traditional ceremonial roles. His interest in science developed alongside his training as a royal, reflecting Japan's focus on education and research during the country's rapid economic recovery and growth in the 1950s and 1960s.
