Biography

Gregório de Matos e Guerra was born on December 23, 1636, in Salvador, Bahia, in colonial Brazil, and died on November 26, 1696, in Recife. He was a lawyer, poet, and musician influenced by Portuguese Baroque style, and he is considered one of the most important literary figures from colonial Brazil. Many call him the founder of Brazilian literature. His work included lyrical, religious, and satirical poetry, but it was his sharp and biting satirical poems that shaped his public image and led to both fame and trouble during his life.

Before Fame

Gregório de Matos was born into a well-known family in Salvador, then the colonial capital of Brazil, during the time when the Portuguese were firmly establishing control over the region. He got his education in Brazil before going to Portugal to study law at the University of Coimbra, a top institution for Portuguese speakers. This education greatly influenced his poetic style and mastery of language, thanks to the exposure to Baroque literary and intellectual trends. After returning to Brazil, he worked as a lawyer and held church positions. However, it was his poetry, which was shared in manuscript form rather than being printed, that secured his lasting place in literary history.
