Biography
Ana Celia de Armas Caso, born on April 30, 1988, in Havana, Cuba, began acting at 16, scoring a lead role in the 2006 romantic drama "Una rosa de Francia." At 18, she left Cuba for Madrid, Spain, to seek more acting roles and obtained Spanish citizenship along with her Cuban nationality.
In Spain, she starred in the popular TV series "El Internado" from 2007 to 2010. This role made her a rising star in Spanish-language entertainment and set the stage for her international career. Her performance in the series showed her skill in handling complex dramatic roles and connecting with audiences from different backgrounds.
To broaden her career, de Armas moved to Los Angeles for English-language roles in Hollywood. Early appearances included movies like the psychological thriller "Knock Knock" (2015) with Keanu Reeves and the comedy-crime film "War Dogs" (2016). These roles helped her improve her English-language acting and make connections in the American film industry.
She gained international recognition playing Joi, the holographic AI, in Denis Villeneuve's "Blade Runner 2049" (2017). Her performance added depth and emotion to the character. She then played nurse Marta Cabrera in Rian Johnson's "Knives Out" (2019), receiving a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Comedy or Musical and winning a Golden Schmoes Award.
Her career continued to rise with roles like Paloma in the James Bond film "No Time to Die" (2021) and her portrayal of Marilyn Monroe in the biographical drama "Blonde" (2022). This role earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress, making her the first Cuban actress to achieve this. She was married to Spanish actor Marc Clotet and has received a Saturn Award in 2020 along with her Golden Schmoes win.
Before Fame
Growing up in Havana during the 1990s and early 2000s, de Armas was raised in a Cuba dealing with the post-Soviet era economic challenges known as the Special Period. Despite limited resources and restricted cultural exchange with the outside world, she developed an early passion for acting. Her family supported her artistic dreams, and she took acting classes as a teenager.
Leaving Cuba at such a young age took a lot of courage and determination, as it meant leaving behind family, friends, and everything familiar for an uncertain future in Europe. Her move to Madrid was not just a career decision but a complete life change, requiring her to adapt to a new culture while honing her skills in a competitive entertainment market. This experience of adapting to new cultures would later be very helpful when she moved to Hollywood.
