Biography

Celia Caridad Cruz Alfonso was born on October 21, 1925, in Vereda Nueva, La Habana, Cuba, and became one of the most celebrated Latin music performers of the 20th century. Known globally as the 'Queen of Salsa,' Cruz built her reputation over more than five decades, recording over 70 albums and selling more than 30 million records worldwide. Her powerful voice and energetic stage presence made her a key figure in Latin music, especially in salsa, guaracha, and other Afro-Cuban styles.

Cruz started her career in Cuba in the 1950s, first gaining fame as a guaracha singer known as La Guarachera de Cuba. Her most notable early collaboration was with the famous group Sonora Matancera, which lasted 15 years from 1950 to 1965. During this time, she mastered various Afro-Cuban music styles like rumba, son, and bolero, proving herself a versatile and skilled vocalist.

After the Cuban Revolution in 1960, Cruz left Cuba due to the music industry's nationalization, becoming a prominent voice for the Cuban exile community. She initially moved to Mexico before making the United States her permanent home, where she continued her music career. In the 1960s, she teamed up with Tito Puente and recorded her well-known song 'Bemba colorá.' In the 1970s, Cruz signed with Fania Records, strengthening her ties to salsa and producing hits like 'Quimbara.'

Throughout her later career, Cruz remained a top figure in Latin music, performing often with the Fania All-Stars and working with artists like Johnny Pacheco and Willie Colón. Her ongoing success included hits like 'La vida es un carnaval' and 'La negra tiene tumbao.' Cruz was married to Pedro Knight, who was also her musical director. She died on July 16, 2003, in Fort Lee, leaving behind 37 studio albums, many live recordings, and collaborations that shaped generations of Latin music artists.

Before Fame

Celia Cruz was born into a working-class family in Havana. Her father wanted her to become a teacher, not a musician, but she pursued music anyway. She studied music theory, voice, and piano at Havana's National Conservatory of Music. Growing up with Afro-Cuban musical traditions in her neighborhood, along with her formal training, helped develop her unique vocal style.

In the 1940s and 1950s, Cuba's music scene was thriving, with Havana being a lively center for Latin American entertainment. Radio stations and nightclubs offered chances for new artists, and Cruz started performing on radio shows and at local venues. Her big break came when she won a radio singing contest, leading to regular radio spots and, eventually, an audition with Sonora Matancera, one of Cuba's top musical groups.
