She went to All Saints Anglican School for her early education and later trained in acting at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA), a top Australian performing arts school. After graduating, she began her career in Australian TV and theater. Her big break came when she played FBI agent Olivia Dunham in the Fox science fiction series Fringe, which started in 2008. This role was key in her international career and made her well-known in science fiction TV. Her portrayal of the complex federal agent was praised by critics and loved by fans. Olivia Dunham's character involved dealing with parallel universes, scientific mysteries, and intense emotional stories during the show's five seasons from 2008 to 2013. Her performance won her four Saturn Awards for Best Actress on Television in a row, a record for that category. After Fringe ended, Torv took on challenging roles in different genres. She played Dr. Wendy Carr, a forensic psychologist, in Netflix's period crime drama Mindhunter from 2017 to 2019, showing her ability to shift from science fiction to psychological crime drama. In 2023, she was in HBO's adaptation of The Last of Us as the character Tess. Her guest role in this post-apocalyptic series earned her a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series. Despite her worldwide success, Torv has stayed connected to Australian productions. She starred in the ABC drama series The Newsreader, focused on the Australian TV news industry in the 1980s, earning her two AACTA Awards. In 2024, she took a lead role in Territory, a Netflix drama series set in Australia's Northern Territory, which premiered in October. Torv was married to American actor Mark Valley, whom she met while working on Fringe where Valley had a recurring role.
