Biography

Pope Benedict XVI, originally named Joseph Alois Ratzinger, was born on April 16, 1927, in Marktl, Bavaria. He was the 265th Pope of the Catholic Church, serving from 2005 until 2013. He was the first pope to resign in almost 600 years, deciding to step down due to age and health issues. After resigning, he took on the title "Pope Emeritus" and lived in Vatican City until he passed away on December 31, 2022.

Ratzinger became a priest in 1951 and quickly gained recognition as a brilliant theologian and scholar. By 1958, he was a full professor, an impressive feat for someone so young. His expertise led to positions at top German universities, and he became known as a leading Catholic thinker in Europe. Initially, he was seen as a progressive during the Second Vatican Council, but his views became more conservative after the 1968 student protests.

In 1977, Pope Paul VI made him Archbishop of Munich and Freising and a cardinal, despite his limited pastoral background, due to his outstanding theological skills and rising status within the Church. In 1981, Pope John Paul II called him to Rome to be the Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, acting as the Church's chief doctrinal enforcer. In this role, Ratzinger became hugely influential in the Vatican and was a close advisor to John Paul II.

After John Paul II's death in April 2005, Ratzinger was elected pope by the College of Cardinals on April 19, 2005. He chose the name Benedict XVI to honor Pope Benedict XV and Saint Benedict of Nursia. During his time as pope, he focused on defending traditional Catholic beliefs against what he saw as increasing secularism and moral relativism in Western culture. Throughout his life, Benedict wrote many theological works and continued to do so even after his resignation, making a lasting contribution to Catholic thought until he died at 95.

Before Fame

Joseph Ratzinger was born into a devout Catholic family in Bavaria during a time of political upheaval in the Weimar Republic. His father was a police officer who stood against the Nazi regime, leading the family to move often during Ratzinger's childhood. Although he was conscripted into the Hitler Youth and later the German military in World War II, he deserted near the war's end and was briefly held as a prisoner of war by the Allied forces.

After the war, Ratzinger went to the seminary and studied theology at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München and the Ducal Georgianum. His doctoral dissertation on Saint Augustine and later academic work quickly established him as a gifted theologian. The lively discussions in post-war Catholic theology, especially leading up to the Second Vatican Council, helped him rise swiftly in academic and church circles.
