Biography

Bernard (797–818) was King of Italy from 810 to 817, during a time of change for the Carolingian Empire. Born in Hauts-de-France as the illegitimate son of Pepin of Italy, he became king at thirteen after his father's death in 810. His short reign was filled with political struggles and ended tragically because he opposed imperial reforms.

Bernard ruled Italy under the watchful eye of his grandfather, Emperor Charlemagne, who had made Italy part of the Carolingian Empire. Bernard married Cunigunde, though little is known about their married life or children. His situation became unstable after Charlemagne died in 814, when his uncle Louis the Pious took over and started making major changes.

The turning point of Bernard's rule came in 817, when Louis issued the Ordinatio Imperii, a plan that reshaped succession and governance. This greatly diminished Bernard's role, making him a vassal under his cousin Lothair, Louis's main heir. This loss of power pushed Bernard to plan a rebellion against the emperor in hopes of keeping his kingdom's independence.

However, Bernard's plot was uncovered before it could be carried out, leading to harsh consequences. By late 817, Louis the Pious had Bernard removed and put on trial for treason. He was sentenced to blinding, considered merciful compared to execution, but it ended up being fatal. The procedure took place in 818, and Bernard died from the injuries on April 17 that year in Milan. His death at twenty-one marked the end of the Pepinid line in Italy and showed how determined the Carolingian family was to maintain unity in the empire.

Before Fame

Bernard's early life was greatly influenced by being the illegitimate son of Pepin of Italy, who was a son of Emperor Charlemagne. Born in Hauts-de-France in 797, Bernard grew up when the Carolingian Empire was at its peak, covering much of Western Europe. Despite being born out of wedlock, he was named Pepin's heir, which was a common Carolingian practice for ensuring capable leadership when necessary for family continuity.

Bernard's rise to the throne was helped by Charlemagne's practical succession strategy and the absence of legitimate heirs. When Pepin died in 810, the thirteen-year-old Bernard became King of Italy under the watch of the empire, inheriting a kingdom that was well-integrated into the bigger Carolingian administration yet still retained its unique character and traditional rights.
