Biography
Bias of Priene was a Greek sage who thrived in the 6th century BC and became one of the Seven Sages of Greece. Born in the ancient city of Priene on the Ionian coast of Asia Minor, he focused on law and philosophy, becoming a well-known legal advocate who offered his services free to those who were wronged. His commitment to justice and ethics made him a respected figure in Greece.
As a lawyer, Bias was known for his speech-making skills and strong morals. He was dedicated to defending the oppressed and refused payment for his services, seeing his work more as a moral obligation than a way to gain wealth. He believed that virtue and justice were far more important than material wealth. His career included many successful defenses of clients who would otherwise have faced powerful opponents alone.
In addition to his legal work, Bias acted as a diplomat for Priene. He was chosen to negotiate during a dispute between Priene and Samos, although those efforts didn't succeed. Still, his selection for such a role showed the high regard his fellow citizens had for him. His philosophical teachings highlighted human unpredictability, famously stating that most people have fundamental flaws. He also taught the importance of respecting the gods and taking personal responsibility.
Bias died as he lived, devoted to his principles and service to others. According to history, he died in Priene while arguing a court case in his old age. His death came while he was performing his professional duties, which people saw as fitting for someone who dedicated his life to justice. After his death, he was celebrated in Priene as one of their greatest citizens, earning praise even from the critical philosopher Heraclitus.
