Biography

Bleddyn ap Cynfyn was a Welsh king in the 11th century, ruling Powys and co-ruling Gwynedd from 1063 until he died in 1075. Coming from a powerful noble family, he rose to prominence after the death of his half-brother Gruffydd ap Llywelyn, the last king to rule most of Wales. Harold and Tostig Godwinson, two Anglo-Saxon brothers, made Bleddyn and his brother Rhiwallon co-rulers of Gwynedd during their campaign against Gruffydd's kingdom in 1063.

As the king, Bleddyn ruled during a tumultuous time in Welsh history with Anglo-Saxon interference and internal conflicts. His reign saw major changes in Britain, including the Norman Conquest of 1066, which changed the political scene in the British Isles. Despite these challenges, Bleddyn kept his position and started a dynasty in Powys.

Bleddyn married Haer ferch Cillin, and through their union and his political skills, he established the House of Mathrafal. This royal house ruled Powys for generations after his death, with Bleddyn's lineage being one of the most lasting in medieval Wales. His descendants held onto control over Powys well into the later medieval period, keeping Welsh independence in this region while other parts of Wales fell under foreign control.

Bleddyn's death in 1075 marked a significant shift in Welsh politics, but the dynasty he established carried on his political legacy. His time as ruler marked a transition between the unified Wales under Gruffydd ap Llywelyn and the divided Welsh kingdoms that later faced growing Norman pressure. Through his descendants, Bleddyn's impact on Welsh political development continued long after his time.

Before Fame

Bleddyn ap Cynfyn was born into the well-known Welsh noble family of Cynfyn ap Gwerstan in the early 11th century. His early life was influenced by the power of his half-brother Gruffydd ap Llywelyn, who had managed to unify much of Wales and posed a major threat to Anglo-Saxon England.

Bleddyn's rise to power came after the violent end of Gruffydd ap Llywelyn's rule in 1063. Harold and Tostig Godwinson led a brutal campaign against Gruffydd's kingdom, which eventually led to the Welsh king's murder by his own men. Instead of letting Wales fall into complete chaos or trying to govern it directly, the Godwinson brothers decided to put Bleddyn and his brother Rhiwallon in power, thinking they would be easier to manage than the strong-willed Gruffydd had been.
