Biography

Carrie-Anne Moss, born August 21, 1967, in Burnaby, British Columbia, is a Canadian-American actress best known for playing Trinity in The Matrix film trilogy. Her career has lasted over three decades, covering TV, film, and streaming in various genres. Moss started acting professionally in the early 1990s with TV roles before moving on to films that made her a key figure in science fiction cinema.

Moss trained at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts after finishing her studies at Magee Secondary School. She had her big break in 1999 with The Matrix, where she played the leather-clad hacker Trinity alongside Keanu Reeves and Laurence Fishburne. This role skyrocketed her to fame and changed the way action roles for women were seen, mixing martial arts with strong acting. She played Trinity again in The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, and returned to the series in The Matrix Resurrections.

Outside of The Matrix series, Moss showed her range with roles in highly praised films like Memento (2000), directed by Christopher Nolan, earning her the Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Female. Her films include a mix of genres, such as the romantic drama Chocolat (2000) and the sci-fi thriller Red Planet (2000). She won critical acclaim for her performance in Snow Cake (2006), winning the Genie Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role.

On TV, Moss gained fresh recognition as lawyer Jeri Hogarth in Marvel Television's Netflix series, starting with Jessica Jones in 2015. This role highlighted her skill in playing complex, morally complicated characters and introduced her to a younger audience. Her recent projects include the indie drama Die Alone (2024), earning her a Canadian Screen Award nomination for Best Lead Performance in a Drama Film, showing her ongoing importance in today’s cinema.

Throughout her career, Moss has balanced commercial hits with artistic choices, picking projects that push the boundaries of genre filmmaking. Her work has changed how strong female characters are depicted in action films while staying true to storytelling focused on character development across different media.

Before Fame

Growing up in British Columbia during the 1970s and 1980s, Moss came of age as the Canadian entertainment industry was starting to reach audiences worldwide. She attended Magee Secondary School and later studied acting at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, a common path for Canadian actors looking to hone their skills in well-known American schools.

The late 1980s and early 1990s were a changing time in entertainment, with cable TV offering more opportunities for new actors. At the same time, Hollywood was starting to cast more inclusively. Moss entered the industry during this shift, starting in television before the film industry experienced big changes in the late 1990s. This was especially true in the science fiction genre, where new technology in filmmaking opened up exciting possibilities for the groundbreaking films that would become key parts of her career.
