Biography
Mohammed VI, also known as Mohammed ben El Hassan, was born on August 21, 1963, in Rabat, Morocco, during King Hassan II's reign. As a part of the Alawi dynasty, he had a comprehensive education at the Collège Royal in Morocco, Mohammed V University, and the University of Nice Sophia Antipolis in France. From a young age, he was involved in public duties for his father, gearing him up to become king.
When he became king in 1999, after Hassan II died, Mohammed VI started major reforms in many parts of Moroccan life. Early on, he changed the family code to give women more rights, showing his aim to modernize. He supported non-sectarian Islam and Berber culture, making Standard Moroccan Amazigh an official national language along with Standard Arabic, and set Yennayer, the Amazigh New Year, as a national holiday.
In 2011, the Arab Spring protests were a big test for him, with Moroccans protesting alleged government corruption. He responded by making constitutional changes, approved by a public vote on July 1, 2011, to address citizens' worries while keeping the monarchy's key role in governing. His modernization work also touched on the economy and military, making Morocco a leader in some areas in the region.
On the world stage, Mohammed VI followed his father's moderate path but also widened Morocco's international relations. He connected with major powers like the United States, European Union, and China, while focusing on African countries. His government has often pushed for international support for Morocco's claim to the Western Sahara. Under his watch, Morocco became the sixth Arab League country to normalize ties with Israel through the Abraham Accords, showing his practical style in regional affairs.
Outside politics, Mohammed VI has amassed substantial business interests across various sectors in Morocco. In 2015, Forbes estimated his net worth at over $5.2 billion, but his wealth has been criticized. WikiLeaks diplomatic cables in 2010 led to corruption allegations against the royal court and his close advisors, pointing out the challenges of transparency in monarchy-led governance.
Before Fame
Mohammed VI was prepared for leadership from a young age to become the Moroccan king. His father, Hassan II, made sure he received both a traditional Islamic education and modern Western schooling, sending him to France for university studies. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, he took on more public duties and ceremonial roles, gaining experience in statecraft while Morocco moved through the last years of the Cold War.
The young prince grew up when Morocco was becoming a stable constitutional monarchy in North Africa. His education in both Moroccan and French schools equipped him to connect traditional Islamic governance with modern democratic ideas, skills that were crucial when he took the throne at age 35 in 1999.
