Biography

Charibert I was a Merovingian king who ruled Paris from 561 until he died in 567. Born around 517 to 520, he was the second-eldest son of Chlothar I and his first wife, Ingund. After the deaths of his elder brother Gunthar and later his father in 561, Charibert joined the usual Frankish practice of dividing the kingdom among the surviving male heirs. He got the former territory of Childebert I, making Paris his capital and ruling a large part of the Frankish realm.

Charibert's kingdom included the Paris area and stretched south into Aquitaine and west to the Atlantic coast. His reign featured the complex political dynamics typical of Merovingian succession, where multiple brothers ruled different parts of their father's former kingdom. This system, while keeping with Frankish tradition, often led to territorial disputes and changing alliances among the royal siblings.

Charibert's personal life showed the common practice of polygamy among Merovingian royalty. He married several wives, including Ingoberga, Meroflede, Theodechilde, and Marcova. These marriages were both personal and political, helping to form alliances and expand influence. However, some of his marital choices caused issues with the Catholic Church, especially his marriage to Marcova, who had been a nun.

His reign lasted only six years, ending with his death in December 567 at Chelles, a place that would later become known for its royal monastery. Charibert died without male heirs, leading to another division of his lands among his surviving brothers. His short reign took place during a time of major changes in Frankish politics, as the Merovingian dynasty continued to gain power while managing the challenges of ruling a large and varied kingdom.

Before Fame

Charibert grew up during his father Chlothar I's rule, who had gradually brought much of the Frankish kingdom together through conquests and inheritance. As a Merovingian prince, he would have been trained in warfare, government, and the complex task of ruling over the different groups within Frankish territories. The early sixth century saw the Frankish kingdom expanding and consolidating, with frequent military campaigns and changing boundaries.

When his older brother Gunthar died, Charibert became one of the main heirs to his father's kingdom. In Frankish tradition, royal sons were expected to prove themselves in military campaigns and administrative roles before taking full royal authority. This preparation was crucial when Chlothar I died in 561, leaving his kingdom to be divided among his surviving sons following Merovingian custom.
