Biography

Cleopatra IV was an Egyptian princess from the Ptolemaic dynasty, born in Alexandria around 137 BC. The daughter of Ptolemy VIII Physcon and Cleopatra III, she belonged to one of the most powerful royal families in the Hellenistic world. Her early life was shaped by the intense political rivalries and family conflicts of the late Ptolemaic period, including the turbulent marriage of her parents, known for its political scheming and open conflict.

When Ptolemy VIII died in 116 BC, the question of succession led to conflict. Cleopatra III, who had significant power, initially wanted her younger son to take the throne. However, public pressure in Alexandria forced her to acknowledge her older son, Ptolemy IX Lathyros, as co-ruler. As part of this arrangement, Cleopatra IV married Ptolemy IX. She briefly served as Queen of Egypt alongside him from 116 to 115 BC, making her one of the few Ptolemaic women to hold the queen regnant title, though her reign was short.

Cleopatra III, aiming to strengthen her own position and eliminate a rival, made Ptolemy IX divorce Cleopatra IV, replacing her with another sister, Cleopatra Selene. Cast aside by the Egyptian court, Cleopatra IV did not take her removal lightly. She gathered a mercenary army, an unusual move for a displaced queen, and went to Syria to forge a new political alliance. She offered herself and her troops to Antiochus IX Cyzicenus, a contender for the Seleucid throne embroiled in a struggle with his half-brother Antiochus VIII Grypus.

Cleopatra IV married Antiochus IX Cyzicenus and became his queen consort, providing him with crucial military support. However, her situation remained unstable. Antiochus VIII Grypus, her husband's rival, was married to Cleopatra's sister, Cleopatra Tryphaena. The dynastic war thus turned personal. Cleopatra Tryphaena, who harbored a deep grudge against her sister, reportedly ordered Cleopatra IV's capture. Cleopatra IV sought refuge in a temple in Antioch, but she was dragged out and killed there around 112 to 111 BC. Ancient accounts suggest that Cleopatra Tryphaena was directly involved in ordering the execution, and Antiochus VIII later retaliated against Tryphaena for this act.

Before Fame

Cleopatra IV was born into the royal Ptolemaic court of Alexandria around 137 BC, the daughter of Ptolemy VIII Physcon and his niece-wife Cleopatra III. Growing up, she experienced both the great wealth and intellectual prestige of the court, famous for the Library of Alexandria, and the fierce family rivalries. Her father was a controversial ruler, known for expelling scholars from Alexandria and clashing violently with his family.

Amid the court's intrigues, Cleopatra IV received an education in the Hellenistic tradition and was prepared for a political role typical of royal women at the time, mainly through a strategic marriage. The tensions between her parents and her mother Cleopatra III's ambition to control the throne after her husband's death shaped the political scene that would determine Cleopatra IV's life. She rose to prominence not through a lengthy reign but by marrying Ptolemy IX during the succession in 116 BC.
