Biography

Barbara of Portugal, whose full name was Maria Madalena Bárbara Xavier Leonor Teresa Antónia Josefa, was born on December 4, 1711, in Lisbon to King John V of Portugal and Maria Anna of Austria. As a Portuguese princess, she received an excellent education, particularly excelling in music and the arts. Her musical talents were well-known in European courts, and she was skilled as both a performer and composer.

On January 20, 1729, Barbara married Ferdinand, Prince of Asturias, in a double wedding that also joined her brother Peter with Ferdinand's sister Mariana Victoria. This marriage was part of a diplomatic alliance between Portugal and Spain. During Philip V's reign, Barbara focused on her musical interests and cultural activities at court, living a relatively quiet life with Ferdinand.

In 1746, when Ferdinand became King of Spain as Ferdinand VI, Barbara became Queen of Spain. Her time as queen consort was marked by her strong support for culture and the arts at the Spanish court. She organized salons and musical gatherings that attracted top composers and performers of the time. Barbara's own musical works were recognized, and she kept in touch with key musical figures across Europe.

The couple's marriage was affectionate and harmonious, though they did not have children. Barbara had a big role in shaping cultural policies at court and helped promote Italian opera and Portuguese music in Spain. She also supported painters, architects, and writers. In recognition of her contributions to the arts and her diplomatic efforts to strengthen Iberian ties, she was awarded the prestigious Order of the Starry Cross.

Barbara's health started to decline in the 1750s, and she passed away on August 27, 1758, at the royal palace in Aranjuez. Her death deeply affected Ferdinand VI, who died soon after, ending the reign of one of Spain's most culturally fruitful royal couples.

Before Fame

Born into the Portuguese royal family when King John V's rule was at its height, Barbara grew up amid a significant cultural boom at the Portuguese court. The influx of Brazilian gold had greatly enriched the monarchy, leading to generous support of the arts and music. Barbara was taught by top musicians and composers, including Domenico Scarlatti, who was her harpsichord teacher.

Her route to the Spanish throne was set through carefully arranged marriage alliances between the Bourbon and Braganza families. The double wedding in 1729 was aimed at strengthening diplomatic ties between the neighboring kingdoms and marked a move away from previous Habsburg alliances. Barbara's musical training and cultural polish made her a perfect fit for shaping Spanish court culture when she eventually became queen consort.
