Biography
Daniel Roy Gilchrist Noboa Azín was born on November 30, 1987, in Miami, Florida, into a well-known Ecuadorian business family. His father, Álvaro Noboa Pontón, ran for president five times without success and inherited the Noboa Corporation, an agricultural and shipping company founded by Daniel's grandfather. Growing up around business and politics, Noboa was educated at several top institutions, including Harvard University, the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, the Stern School of Business at New York University, and George Washington University.
Before stepping into politics, Noboa worked in different roles within the Noboa Corporation, learning about the export business that made his family one of the richest in Ecuador. He started his political career in 2021 when he got elected to the National Assembly of Ecuador, where he served until 2023. His term ended when President Guillermo Lasso used the muerte cruzada, a constitutional measure to dissolve the assembly.
In May 2023, Noboa announced he was running for president in the snap election, representing the National Democratic Action party. Despite low poll numbers before the first round of voting, he made it to the runoff, which many saw as a surprise. Competing against Luisa González in the October 2023 runoff, Noboa won with nearly 52% of the vote, becoming Ecuador's 48th president at the age of 35.
As president, Noboa has used a militarized strategy to tackle Ecuador's rising crime problem, often declaring states of emergency and increasing the military's role in maintaining internal security. His administration is known for controversial policies that supporters say fight crime effectively, while critics claim they have weakened democratic institutions and human rights. He was re-elected for a full four-year term in 2025, defeating González again with a larger margin. He is married to Lavinia Valbonesi Acosta.
Before Fame
Daniel Noboa was born into Ecuador's most well-known business family, with their wealth coming from agricultural exports, especially bananas. His grandfather started the Noboa Corporation, which grew into one of Latin America's largest fruit exporters. Watching his father run multiple unsuccessful presidential campaigns in the 1990s and 2000s introduced him to Ecuadorian politics early on.
His political career took shape during Ecuador's unstable political climate in the 2020s, which saw widespread protests, economic problems, and increased crime related to drug trafficking. He chose to enter politics when traditional parties were losing trust, allowing candidates from business backgrounds to attract voters looking for economic growth and safety.
