Biography

Danilo Türk, born on February 19, 1952, is a Slovenian diplomat, professor of international law, human rights expert, and political figure. He was President of Slovenia from 2007 to 2012. Born in Maribor, he studied law at the University of Ljubljana and the University of Belgrade Faculty of Law, launching a career in diplomacy, academia, and international relations. His knowledge of international law was crucial during Slovenia's move to independence and its entry into global bodies.

In 1992, Türk became Slovenia's first ambassador to the United Nations, holding the position until 2000 during Slovenia's early years as an independent nation. His skills in diplomacy and law led to his role as UN Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs from 2000 to 2005, where he was involved in conflict resolution and peacekeeping. This experience helped him win the presidency of Slovenia in 2007.

As President from 2007 to 2012, Türk led the country through the global financial crisis while keeping it engaged in European and international affairs. His presidency focused on human rights, international cooperation, and positioning Slovenia as a mediator in Europe. He used his background in law and diplomacy to advance Slovenia's global interests.

After his presidency, Türk continued his academic and humanitarian work. He is a visiting professor of international law at Columbia University in New York City and professor emeritus at the University of Ljubljana's Faculty of Law. He founded the Danilo Türk Foundation, which helps child victims of armed conflict, and chairs the Global High Level Panel on Water and Peace and the board of the Global Fairness Initiative. In 2016, he ran for UN Secretary-General but was unsuccessful. He is married to Barbara Miklič Türk and has received many international honors for his diplomatic and academic work.

Before Fame

Türk grew up during the socialist era in Yugoslavia when Slovenia was still a part of the federal republic. He studied law at the University of Ljubljana and the University of Belgrade in a time of increasing intellectual freedom and awareness of human rights in Eastern Europe. The rising tensions within Yugoslavia during the 1970s and 1980s and the movement for democratic reform shaped Türk's knowledge of international law and human rights.

His rise to prominence began with Slovenia's independence movement in the late 1980s and early 1990s. As Yugoslavia broke apart and Slovenia declared independence in 1991, the new nation needed skilled diplomats and legal experts to establish itself internationally. Türk's background in international law made him a perfect fit to represent Slovenia at the United Nations, where it needed to build relationships and assert its sovereignty.
