Biography
Delcy Eloína Rodríguez Gómez, born on November 18, 1969, in Caracas, Venezuela, is a well-known Venezuelan politician, diplomat, and lawyer. She has held several high-level roles in the Venezuelan government under President Nicolás Maduro. She is currently the Executive Vice President of Venezuela, making her one of the most powerful political figures in the country and Maduro's constitutional successor.
Rodríguez earned her law degree from the Central University of Venezuela and later studied international relations. Her political career began during Hugo Chávez's time, when she got involved with the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV). She quickly moved up due to her legal skills and political insights, becoming a trusted ally of the Bolivarian government.
In 2017, Rodríguez was elected President of the highly debated National Constituent Assembly, a body set up by the Maduro government to draft a new constitution amid widespread opposition protests. This position put her at the heart of Venezuela's constitutional crisis and made her a key player in the government's response to political opposition. Her leadership of the assembly drew significant international criticism, with many countries refusing to recognize its legitimacy.
Before becoming Vice President, Rodríguez was Venezuela's Foreign Minister from 2014 to 2017, where she defended the government's positions internationally despite growing diplomatic isolation. She has been sanctioned by the United States, the European Union, and other countries for her role in what they see as the decline of democratic institutions in Venezuela. Despite these sanctions, she remains one of the most influential political figures in today's Venezuelan politics.
Before Fame
Delcy Rodríguez was born into a middle-class family in Caracas and studied law at the Central University of Venezuela during the 1990s, a time when the country was dealing with political instability and an economic crisis. Her early experiences coincided with the rise of Hugo Chávez and the Bolivarian movement, which influenced her political beliefs and career path.
In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Venezuela saw major political changes, with traditional parties losing influence to Chávez's revolutionary message. This climate offered chances for young, dedicated people like Rodríguez to take on roles in the new political system, as the Bolivarian government was looking for loyal professionals to carry out its vision of 21st-century socialism.
