Biography
Dhatusena was a Sri Lankan ruler from 455 to 473 AD who started the Moriyan dynasty. His time in power ended almost thirty years of political breakup in Sri Lanka after a centralized government fell apart. When he took the throne, the island was split into six regions, each under the control of different Dravidian leaders. Through strategic military campaigns, he defeated these leaders and unified the country. His success in bringing the island together after such a long period of division showed his impressive military and political skills.
Some records call the king Dasenkeli, highlighting differences in the way his name appears in various sources. Dhatusena is well-known for his extensive infrastructure projects, especially in water management and irrigation. He built many reservoirs and canal systems that greatly boosted the island's ability to grow food. These projects increased food production and supported population growth and economic stability throughout his kingdom.
Dhatusena's irrigation systems were among the most advanced of their time. The reservoirs stored large amounts of water during monsoon seasons, ensuring steady crops even in dry months.
