Biography

Diego Armando Maradona (30 October 1960 – 25 November 2020) was an Argentine football player and manager, widely seen as one of the greatest in the sport's history. Born in Lanús Partido, Argentina, Maradona rose from modest beginnings to become a football icon around the world, earning the nickname 'El Pibe de Oro' (The Golden Boy) for his outstanding talent. Although he was small in stature, he made a huge impact on the field, using his low center of gravity, superb ball control, and exceptional dribbling skills to weave through defenses with unmatched ability.

Maradona's club career took him to several continents, where he played for Argentinos Juniors, Boca Juniors, Barcelona, Napoli, Sevilla, and Newell's Old Boys. He gained particular fame at Napoli, where he turned the southern Italian club into a European powerhouse, leading them to their first Serie A title in 1987 and another in 1990. His transfers set world records twice, first when Barcelona paid £5 million for him in 1982, and again when Napoli acquired him for £6.9 million in 1984, showing his high value in football.

Internationally, Maradona earned 91 caps for Argentina and scored 34 goals, playing in four FIFA World Cups. His most famous achievement came in 1986 when he led Argentina to World Cup victory in Mexico, earning the Golden Ball as the tournament's best player. The quarter-final match against England is legendary for two opposing goals: the controversial 'Hand of God' goal and a second goal showing his individual brilliance, often called one of the greatest goals in World Cup history.

Maradona's personal life faced difficulties with substance abuse, affecting both his playing career and later life. His time at Napoli ended after a cocaine-related ban, and he experienced various health problems throughout his life. He was married to Claudia Villafañe and later turned to coaching, managing the Argentine national team and other positions. Maradona died on 25 November 2020 in Dique Luján, leaving behind a complex legacy that includes his extraordinary football achievements and his personal struggles.

Before Fame

Diego Maradona grew up in Villa Fiorito, a poor suburb of Buenos Aires, where football was a way to escape economic hardship. His talent was clear early on when he joined the youth academy of Argentinos Juniors at just eight years old. Maradona's skills were so amazing that he became a local celebrity, performing at halftime shows during Argentinos Juniors matches and wowing crowds with his ball juggling.

At 15, Maradona made his professional debut with Argentinos Juniors in 1976, becoming the club's youngest ever player at that time. His quick rise in Argentine football happened at a time when South American players were gaining more recognition in European leagues, paving the way for his future international fame.
