Biography

Zoran Milanović is a Croatian politician who has been the President of Croatia since 2020. He was re-elected in 2025 with 74% of the vote. Born on October 30, 1966, in Zagreb, he was previously the Prime Minister from 2011 to 2016 and led the Social Democratic Party (SDP) from 2007 to 2016. His political career has focused on European integration and social democratic values.

After graduating from the Faculty of Law at the University of Zagreb, Milanović started his career at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He gained international experience as an advisor at the Croatian mission to the European Union and NATO in Brussels from 1996 to 1999. During this time, he joined the SDP in 1999 and earned a master's degree in European Union law at the Free University of Brussels in 1998. He later became an assistant to the Croatian foreign minister for political multilateral affairs in 2003.

Milanović rose to party leadership in June 2007 when he was elected president of the SDP after the death of longtime party leader and former prime minister Ivica Račan. Even though the party came in second in the 2007 parliamentary election and couldn't form a government, he was re-elected as party leader in 2008. His strategic skills were evident in 2011 when he formed the Kukuriku Coalition, bringing together four center to center-left political parties.

The Kukuriku Coalition's win in the 2011 parliamentary election changed Croatian politics, with the SDP becoming the largest party in Parliament. Milanović became Prime Minister on December 23, 2011, after Parliament approved his cabinet. His time as Prime Minister included key initiatives like completing Croatia's EU accession process, overseeing the 2012 European Union membership referendum, tax code reforms, passing fiscalization laws, and launching major infrastructure projects. His government also addressed the Swiss franc loan crisis affecting many Croatian citizens.

Before Fame

Milanović's political journey started with his legal studies at the University of Zagreb's Faculty of Law, which laid the groundwork for his career in diplomacy and politics. In his early career at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, his role as an advisor to Croatia's EU and NATO mission in Brussels from 1996 to 1999 gave him insight into international politics during Croatia's crucial post-independence years.

His work on European integration and advanced studies in EU law at the Free University of Brussels influenced his political views and skills. Joining the SDP in 1999 during Croatia's democratic period, his diplomatic experience made him a valuable asset to the party as the country aimed to build international relations and seek EU membership.
