Biography
Dwayne Douglas Johnson, born on May 2, 1972, in Hayward, California, is an American actor and professional wrestler known as 'The Rock.' He's considered one of the best professional wrestlers ever and has also made a successful career in Hollywood. His movies have earned over $11.4 billion worldwide, making him one of the top-grossing actors. He co-owns the United Football League, sits on the board of TKO Group Holdings, and co-founded Seven Bucks Productions.
Johnson went to several schools, such as McGavock Comprehensive High School, Freedom High School, and President William McKinley High School, before getting a sports scholarship to the University of Miami. He played football there and was part of the 1991 national championship team, mostly as a backup. He hoped to go pro but wasn't picked in the 1995 NFL Draft and had a short stint with the Calgary Stampeders in the Canadian Football League before being released.
In 1996, with help from his father, retired wrestler Rocky Johnson, Dwayne got a contract with the World Wrestling Federation. He quickly rose to fame with his charismatic personality and quick wit, first as a trash-talking villain and then as a fan favorite. During the WWF's Attitude Era in the late 1990s and early 2000s, Johnson was a key figure. He won ten world championships, becoming the promotion's first world champion of African descent. He also won two Intercontinental Championships, five Tag Team Championships, and the 2000 Royal Rumble. He headlined WrestleMania six times and is noted as WWE's sixth Triple Crown champion.
After leaving WWE in 2004, Johnson became a successful actor. He starred in movies like The Scorpion King, became a regular in the Fast and Furious series with films like Fast Five, Fast & Furious 6, and Furious 7, and voiced a character in Disney's Moana. His work across action, comedy, and family films kept him popular in mainstream media for over 20 years. He has been married twice, first to Dany Garcia and then to Lauren Hashian. Johnson returned to WWE part-time in 2011, retired in 2019, and came back again in 2023. He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, multiple Teen Choice Awards, and is in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter Hall of Fame.
Before Fame
Dwayne Johnson grew up in a family deeply involved in professional wrestling, with his father Rocky Johnson being a well-known wrestler and his grandfather Peter Maivia also an important figure in the sport. His childhood involved moving around a lot, across multiple states and attending several high schools, which taught him early on to adapt and be resilient. Financial struggles were a constant part of his youth, and his family was evicted from their apartment when he was a teenager.
Johnson used his athletic ability in football, earning a scholarship to the University of Miami, where he was on the national championship team in 1991. When his dreams of playing professional football didn't work out after going undrafted and being cut by the Calgary Stampeders, he faced a turning point. Thanks to his family's wrestling connections and especially his father's influence, he joined the WWF in 1996, leading to the global fame he enjoys today.
