Biography

Imane Khelif (Arabic: إيمان خليف, romanized: ʾĪmān Khalīf, pronounced [ʔiːˈmaːn xəˈliːf]; born 2 May 1999) is an Algerian professional boxer who gained international fame by winning the women's welterweight gold medal at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. Born in Aïn Sidi Ali, Algeria, Khelif began boxing professionally in the late 2010s and quickly proved to be a strong competitor in both lightweight and welterweight divisions.

Khelif first appeared on the international scene at the 2018 AIBA Women's World Boxing Championships, competing in both the lightweight and welterweight categories. Her early career showed steady progress as she gained experience internationally. At the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, she reached the quarterfinals of the women's lightweight event, showcasing her growing skill and competitiveness in high-level amateur boxing.

After winning several regional titles, Khelif earned a silver medal at the 2022 IBA Women's World Boxing Championships, highlighting her status as one of the top female boxers globally. However, her career faced major hurdles when she was disqualified from the 2023 IBA Women's World Boxing Championships for allegedly failing unspecified sex verification tests. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) later called this decision 'sudden and arbitrary.'

The 2024 Paris Olympics became a pivotal moment in Khelif's career, though not without controversy. After defeating Italian boxer Angela Carini in the early rounds, false rumors spread online claiming she was biologically male. These rumors sparked international debate and media coverage. However, Khelif was born female and has always competed in women's events, including those under the IOC. She is not transgender. Despite the controversy, she advanced through the tournament and won the gold medal in the women's welterweight division.

Since World Boxing started mandatory sex verification testing for women in May 2025, Khelif hasn't participated in events organized by them, with her appeal against this requirement ongoing as of September 2025. In a February 2026 CNN interview, Khelif revealed she naturally has high testosterone levels, which she has been lowering under medical guidance, and she expressed her readiness to undergo mandatory IOC sex verification tests.

Before Fame

Imane Khelif was born in Aïn Sidi Ali, a small town in Algeria. She took up boxing as a teenager, despite cultural and social barriers to women's participation in combat sports. While Algeria has produced boxing stars like Olympic champion Hocine Soltani, Khelif found fewer opportunities for women when she started training.

She began competing internationally in the mid-2010s by honing her skills in local and national contests. Pursuing a professional boxing career meant she had to overcome societal pressures and the limited resources available for women's sports in Algeria. Her big break came when she qualified for the 2018 World Championships, marking the start of her international career and placing her among Algeria's top female boxers.
