Biography

Ehud Olmert was born on September 30, 1945, in Nahalat Jabotinsky, a neighborhood established by supporters of Ze'ev Jabotinsky, a leader in the Revisionist Zionist movement. His father, Mordechai Olmert, was a member of the right-wing Herut party, and this political environment greatly influenced Olmert's introduction to Israeli politics. He studied law at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, setting the stage for his future in both politics and law. Olmert married Aliza Olmert, balancing family life with his growing political career.

Olmert's political journey began early when he was elected to the Knesset in 1973 as a Likud member at just 28. Over two decades, he built his political reputation, holding several ministerial roles, including Minister without Portfolio (1988-1990) and Minister of Health (1990-1992). His career took a major turn in 1993 when he became the Mayor of Jerusalem, a role he held for two terms until 2003. As mayor, he focused on urban development, which later played a part in both his political achievements and legal issues.

Olmert returned to national politics in 2003, holding roles like Designated Acting Prime Minister, Minister of Trade, and Minister of Communications. He was also acting Minister of Finance from 2005 to 2006 after Benjamin Netanyahu resigned. The pivotal point in Olmert's career occurred in late 2005 when he left Likud with Prime Minister Ariel Sharon to form the new centrist Kadima party. This move positioned him as Sharon's potential successor, significantly changing Israeli politics.

Olmert became Prime Minister after Sharon had a massive stroke in January 2006, initially serving as acting Prime Minister before leading Kadima to electoral victory and officially taking office later that year. His time as Prime Minister included major military action, notably the 2006 Lebanon War, which damaged his public image due to the lack of a definite outcome. The Winograd Commission criticized his management of the war, leading to protests for his resignation. Despite these setbacks, Olmert tried to pursue peace with Palestinian leaders but the 2009 Gaza War interrupted these efforts. Facing declining approval and corruption investigations, Olmert resigned in 2008. He stayed in office until March 2009, when Netanyahu took over. After leaving politics, Olmert's legal troubles culminated in a 2014 conviction for bribery and obstruction of justice, making him the first former Israeli Prime Minister to be sentenced to prison.

Before Fame

Growing up in Nahalat Jabotinsky during the early years of Israel, Olmert was surrounded by the ideas of Revisionist Zionism from a young age. His father Mordechai's work with the Herut party gave Ehud firsthand insight into the political movements shaping modern Israel. The neighborhood, named after the Revisionist leader, highlighted a Zionist ideology focused on territorial expansion and strong national defense.

Olmert quickly rose to prominence in 1970s Israel, when the country was still developing and offering opportunities for ambitious people. His law studies at Hebrew University took place as Israel was changing from a pioneering society to a more established nation, increasing the need for politically skilled lawyers who could handle both domestic and international issues. His election to the Knesset at 28 showed his ambition and the lively nature of Israeli politics at that time.
