Biography

Elliot Page (born February 21, 1987) is a Canadian actor, producer, and activist known worldwide for his leading roles in film and TV. Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Page attended several schools, including Halifax Grammar School, Queen Elizabeth High School, Shambhala School, and Vaughan Road Academy. He started on television and then moved to major film roles, becoming one of Canada's most well-known actors.

Page first attracted attention with his role in the psychological thriller Hard Candy (2005) and next as Kitty Pryde in X-Men: The Last Stand (2006). His big break was playing the lead in Juno (2007), a role that earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress, making him the fourth-youngest to be nominated in that category at the time. The role also won him a Satellite Award for Best Actress – Motion Picture in 2007 and an Independent Spirit Award for Best Female Lead in 2008. He has been part of major projects like Inception (2010), X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014), and various indie films.

Beyond movies, Page has been active in TV and digital media. He starred as Viktor Hargreeves in the Netflix series The Umbrella Academy from 2019 to 2024, did motion capture for the game Beyond: Two Souls (2013), and hosted the documentary series Gaycation (2016-2017). He directed the documentary There's Something in the Water (2019) about environmental racism in Nova Scotia.

Page's personal life and activism are also well-known. He married dancer and choreographer Emma Portner and has spoken out on LGBTQ rights, reproductive freedom, and environmental issues. In 2014, he came out as lesbian, and in 2020, he came out as transgender, choosing the name Elliot. His activism saw him on Time's 100 Most Influential People list in 2024, and in 2021, he became the first openly transgender man on the cover of Time magazine. He has received many awards throughout his career, including a Gemini Award in 2004 and a Canadian Comedy Award for Best Performance by a Female – Film.

Before Fame

Page grew up in Halifax, Nova Scotia, during the 1990s and early 2000s, a time when Canadian film and television production was growing due to favorable exchange rates and government incentives. He attended several schools in the Halifax area, looking for the right academic fit during his formative years.

In the early 2000s, young Canadian actors found it easier to move between domestic and international markets, especially with the rise of independent cinema and the expansion of cable television. Page started acting when there were more opportunities for Canadian performers in both Hollywood productions and uniquely Canadian content that was gaining international attention.
