Biography

Antonio López de Santa Anna was a Mexican military officer and politician who played a major role in Mexican politics in the early 19th century. Born in Xalapa, Veracruz, in 1794, he climbed the military ranks during Mexico's fight for independence from Spain and became one of the most powerful figures in the country's early years. His political career was full of shifts in loyalty and beliefs, which earned him both supporters and opponents.

Santa Anna first gained military experience fighting against Mexican independence movements as a royalist officer in the Spanish colonial army. However, he switched sides in 1821 to back Agustín de Iturbide's Plan of Iguala, which eventually led to Mexican independence. This opportunistic move was typical of his political style. He was President of Mexico eleven times between 1833 and 1855, often taking power through military coups and uprisings.

His time as president was marked by major territorial losses and military defeats. Notably, he led Mexican forces during the Texas Revolution of 1835-1836. Despite early successes, he was captured at the Battle of San Jacinto and forced to sign treaties recognizing Texas independence. Later, in the Mexican-American War of 1846-1848, his leadership resulted in Mexico's defeat and the loss of about half of its territory to the United States through the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.

In his personal life, Santa Anna married Inés García de López de Santa Anna and was known for his lavish lifestyle and self-promotion. He famously held elaborate funeral ceremonies for his amputated leg, which he lost in the Pastry War with France in 1838. His last presidency ended in 1855 when liberal forces overthrew him during the Revolution of Ayutla. He spent his later years in exile before returning to Mexico City, where he died largely forgotten in 1876.

Before Fame

Santa Anna started his military career in 1810 as a teenager in the Fixed Infantry Regiment of Veracruz, initially serving the Spanish crown during the early years of the Mexican War of Independence. He gained experience fighting against independence leaders like José María Morelos and showed tactical skills that would later shape his military reputation. His early service took place when colonial officers had to choose between loyalty to Spain and the growing push for independence.

His rise to prominence began in 1821 when he saw the political changes and joined Iturbide's independence movement. This strategic choice put him in a good position in the new Mexican state, where military leaders often used battlefield success to gain political power. His early support for independence, along with his regional influence in Veracruz, made him an important figure in Mexican politics after independence.
