De Ravin first gained international attention as Tess Harding in the science fiction TV series Roswell, which aired on The WB from 2000 to 2002. This role introduced her to American audiences and established her as a strong performer in TV. After Roswell, she continued her career with a variety of film and TV projects throughout the mid-2000s.
She became even more widely recognized when she was cast as Claire Littleton in the ABC drama series Lost, which premiered in 2004. The highly popular series followed plane crash survivors on a mysterious island, and de Ravin's role as a young pregnant Australian woman became one of the show's standout characters. She was on the series from 2004 to 2008 and returned for its final season in 2010.
