Biography
Erik of Pomerania (c. 1381-1459) was a monarch who led the Kalmar Union, which included Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, from 1396 to 1439. He was born in Darłowo and was adopted by Queen Margaret I of Denmark, becoming her heir to the united Scandinavian kingdoms. He initially co-ruled with Margaret until her death in 1412, after which he fully took over the union. He was known as Erik VII of Denmark, Erik III of Norway, and Erik XIII of Sweden, though his rule saw increasing conflicts with nobles in all three countries.
Erik married Philippa of England in 1406, strengthening diplomatic relations with England, and was made a Knight of the Garter in 1405. However, his ambitious policies and centralized rule created friction with local nobles who disliked his push for more control. His economic strategies, like high taxes and trade limits, upset both merchants and common people. The king's attempts to keep up with costly military campaigns and court expenses strained the royal budget, leading to more opposition.
By the 1430s, rebellions were widespread across his lands. His harsh treatment of Swedish nobles got him deposed as King of Sweden in 1434, and although he briefly regained the throne in 1436, he lost it for good in 1439. He was also removed as King of Denmark that year and lost control over Norway. After being overthrown, Erik didn’t accept his downfall and turned to piracy in the Baltic Sea, using his knowledge of the sea routes to attack merchant ships.
After years of exile and piracy, Erik's luck shifted in 1449 when he inherited a section of the Duchy of Pomerania. He ruled this smaller area as duke until his death in 1459, having returned to his birthplace in Darłowo. He later married Cecilia, but they had no children. The nickname 'of Pomerania' was initially used by critics to imply he was an outsider in Scandinavia and therefore not a suitable ruler for the Nordic kingdoms.
Before Fame
Erik was born into the politically complex Europe of the late 14th century, where royal succession often depended on dynastic marriages and adoptions. His early years were influenced by Queen Margaret I's plan to unify the Scandinavian kingdoms under one crown. Margaret, who had formed the Kalmar Union, adopted Erik as her heir, understanding the need for a male successor to preserve her political accomplishments.
Margaret carefully planned Erik's rise to power, preparing him for kingship from a young age. He was officially named heir to the three kingdoms and started taking part in governance as a teenager. His training in government and military affairs equipped him to rule the different territories of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, each with its own culture, laws, and noble interests.
