Biography
Ernst Lothar, originally Ernst Lothar Müller, was born on 25 October 1890 in Brno, Moravia. He was a Moravian-Austrian writer, theater director, manager, and producer who worked through the eventful decades of the twentieth century. He studied law at the University of Vienna and initially started a legal career before being drawn toward literature and theater. To stand out, he decided to drop the common surname Müller and worked under the name Ernst Lothar. His brother, Hans Müller-Einigen, chose to add a unique suffix to their shared family name instead.
Before Fame
Lothar grew up during the last years of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, a cultural hub that was home to many writers, artists, and intellectuals in Vienna and Moravia. He studied law at the University of Vienna, which sharpened his analytical skills. However, he was more drawn to the city's lively theater and literary scene. While still studying law, he started writing poetry and prose, which caught the eye of Vienna's cultural community. This led him to pursue a career in both writing and theater that would shape his public life.
