Biography

Michael Peter Balzary, known as Flea, was born on October 16, 1962, in Melbourne, Australia. He moved to the United States when he was young and became a major influence in rock music history as one of its most renowned bass guitarists. As a founding member of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, formed in 1982, Flea helped blend funk, punk, and rock to create a unique sound. His innovative bass techniques and energetic stage presence became key to the band's identity.

Flea has been the only consistent member of the Red Hot Chili Peppers alongside vocalist Anthony Kiedis, featuring on every album the band released. His musical skills stretch beyond the Chili Peppers, working with artists like Johnny Cash, Tom Waits, Nirvana, and Jane's Addiction. He's also participated in supergroups like Atoms for Peace with Radiohead's Thom Yorke, Antemasque, and Rocket Juice & the Moon, showing his ability to adapt to different music styles.

Flea's acting career is also notable, with roles in major films such as the Back to the Future trilogy, The Big Lebowski, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Baby Driver, and Boy Erased. On TV, he did voice work for The Wild Thornberrys and appeared in the Star Wars series Obi-Wan Kenobi. His natural charisma and unique persona make him memorable on both screen and stage.

Outside entertainment, Flea co-founded the Silverlake Conservatory of Music in 2001, a non-profit offering music education to underprivileged children. He also attended USC Thornton School of Music, showing his dedication to musical studies. In 2019, he released his memoir 'Acid for the Children,' sharing his early life and experiences that shaped him. His solo album 'Honora,' released in 2026, marked an exciting new phase in his musical journey.

Before Fame

Born in Melbourne, Flea moved to the United States as a child and attended Fairfax High School in Los Angeles. His early life included personal challenges and exposure to the varied music scene of 1970s and 1980s Los Angeles. As a teenager, he got deeply involved in the punk rock scene and honed his bass playing skills. He was initially influenced by funk musicians like Bootsy Collins and punk bands like the Circle Jerks, with whom he later performed.

Flea and Anthony Kiedis formed the Red Hot Chili Peppers, driven by their friendship and shared interest in combining the raw energy of punk with the groove of funk. This fusion was relatively rare in the early 1980s rock world, but it became the basis for their later success and impact on alternative rock music.
