Biography

Francis Wheatley RA (1747–1801) was an English painter born in London, well-known for his portrait painting and landscape art in the late 1700s. He trained under Richard Wilson and studied at the Duke of Richmond's gallery, developing strong technical skills rooted in British portrait traditions and Continental genre painting. Early on, he worked to build a client base in London's art scene and joined the Royal Academy, eventually becoming a full Academician.

In the late 1770s, Wheatley moved to Dublin, Ireland, reportedly to avoid creditors, and produced some of his most famous works there. Ireland gave him new themes and patrons, allowing him to paint portraits of important Irish figures and scenes of daily Irish life. One of his best-known paintings from this period, A Fair on the Outskirts of Dublin, captures the lively social character of outdoor gatherings with warmth.

Returning to England in the early 1780s, Wheatley married artist Clara Maria Pope. They were a notable pair in London's art circles. Clara was a talented painter herself, known for botanical subjects. Wheatley continued to exhibit at the Royal Academy and gained popularity, especially for a series called the Cries of London. These paintings, depicting street vendors in London, were widely reproduced as engravings and reached a large audience.

The Cries of London series, started in the 1790s, showed hawkers and tradespeople working in the streets, presented in a sentimental style that was popular at the time. These images were engraved and sold widely, bringing Wheatley's work into many homes. While the series offers an idealized view of urban life rather than a gritty one, it provides a glimpse of the types of tradespeople in London at the end of the 18th century.

Wheatley died in London on 28 June 1801. Despite facing health and financial problems in his later years, he remained an active and influential figure in British art. His work includes portraits, landscapes, genre scenes, and narrative painting, showing the wide range of interests and markets that marked the career of a successful British painter in the Georgian era.

Before Fame

Francis Wheatley was born in London in 1747 and showed talent for art from an early age. He trained with the respected British artist Richard Wilson, a well-known landscape painter, and furthered his education at the Duke of Richmond's sculpture gallery, which was a great resource for young artists learning about classical art.

He also learned at William Shipley's drawing school; Shipley founded the Society of Arts. Wheatley then studied at the Royal Academy Schools. These early experiences introduced him to major artistic ideas and styles of the time, helping him develop a flexible style that allowed him to work in portraiture, landscape, and genre painting in the busy London art scene.
