Freddie Mercury, born Farrokh Bulsara on September 5, 1946, in Stone Town, Zanzibar, became one of rock music's most famous performers as Queen's lead singer. His family moved to England in the 1960s, where he studied graphic design at Ealing Art College. Mercury's artistic background shaped his music, adding theatrical elements and a visual style that defined Queen's shows. His four-octave vocal range and energetic stage presence made him a powerful frontman who could captivate audiences in both small venues and large stadiums.
In 1970, Mercury formed Queen with guitarist Brian May, drummer Roger Taylor, and bassist John Deacon. The band's music evolved from heavy rock to include opera, pop, funk, and progressive styles, largely influenced by Mercury's bold musical vision. His songwriting created some of rock's most lasting anthems, such as the six-minute 'Bohemian Rhapsody,' which broke the rules of traditional radio formats and became a global hit. Besides being a singer and main songwriter, Mercury helped shape Queen's visual style through his graphic design skills and theatrical flair.
