Biography
Naratheinkha was a king of the Pagan dynasty, ruling Burma from 1171 to 1174. Born in Bagan in 1134, he became king when the Pagan Empire was at its peak in Southeast Asia. Although he reigned only briefly, he made important administrative decisions and political arrangements that affected the dynasty's succession practices. Naratheinkha had three wives: Min Aung Myat, Saw Ahlwan of Pagan, and Saw Lat of Pagan, following the polygamous customs common among Burmese royalty of that time. One notable decision during his reign was appointing his brother Narapati Sithu as both heir apparent and commander-in-chief of the royal army. This was the first time a reigning king willingly gave up direct command of the armed forces, breaking from tradition in Pagan royal protocol. This decision would have significant consequences for Naratheinkha's personal safety and political stability. His reign ended suddenly and violently in 1174 when he was assassinated by a servant named Aungzwa. The murder happened after Naratheinkha decided to promote one of his brother Sithu's wives to the status of queen, causing enough tension and resentment to lead to the assassination. The historical account of Naratheinkha's life and reign has been debated among scholars, with some questioning the accuracy of traditional sources from this period of Pagan history.
Before Fame
Naratheinkha was born into the royal family of the Pagan dynasty in 1134, during the reign of one of his predecessors when the kingdom was a major power in mainland Southeast Asia. During his youth, the Pagan Empire was thriving, with a boom in temple construction, Buddhist scholarship, and territorial expansion. Growing up at the royal court in Bagan, he would have received the education expected of a prince, learning about statecraft, military matters, Buddhist teachings, and the challenges of governing an empire that covered much of modern-day Myanmar. His path to becoming king likely involved involvement in court politics and possibly military campaigns, although specific details about his early career are not well documented in historical records.
