Biography
Joachim-Friedrich Martin Josef Merz was born on November 11, 1955, in Brilon, North Rhine-Westphalia, West Germany. He attended Gymnasium Petrinum before studying law at the University of Marburg and University of Bonn, finishing in 1985. Merz started his career as a judge and corporate lawyer with a focus on financial law, which became a key part of his political career later on.
Merz got into politics through the Young Union in 1972 and went full-time in 1989 after being elected to the European Parliament. After serving one term, he joined the Bundestag and became the Christian Democratic Union's main financial policy expert. He eventually became the chairman of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group in 2000, the same year Angela Merkel became the party chair. This power-sharing situation led to a lot of internal conflict.
The tension between Merz and Merkel grew since each had different ideas for the CDU's future. After the 2002 federal election, Merkel tightened her grip on power by taking the parliamentary group chairmanship, leaving Merz as deputy leader. The rivalry ended in December 2004 when Merz stepped down from his leadership role, allowing Merkel to solidify her position. He gradually stepped back from politics, leaving parliament in 2009 to focus on his legal and business career.
While out of politics, Merz worked as senior counsel at Mayer Brown, focusing on mergers and acquisitions, banking, finance, and compliance. He served on various corporate boards and became a leading business lobbyist. His book, 'Mehr Kapitalismus wagen' (Venturing More Capitalism), highlighted his pro-business, economically liberal views. Merz returned to parliament in 2021 and won the CDU leadership in January 2022, leading the party as opposition leader until becoming Chancellor of Germany on May 6, 2025. He is married to Charlotte Merz and has received honors like the Orden wider den tierischen Ernst in 2006 and being named in Time 100 in 2025.
Before Fame
Merz grew up in post-war West Germany during the Cold War, deeply influencing his political views and strong anti-communist stance. He got involved with the Young Union in 1972 at 17, showing an early interest in conservative politics that matched the CDU's values. In the 1980s, he studied law while West Germany was experiencing economic growth and closer ties with Western Europe, setting the stage for his expertise in financial policy later on.
His rise in politics came from his legal skills and timing, entering full-time politics in 1989 just as the Berlin Wall fell and Germany started reunifying. This time offered great chances for young politicians with strong pro-Western views and economic insights, helping Merz become a key player in shaping Germany's financial policies after reunification.
