Biography

Fujiwara no Koretada (藤原 伊尹; 924 – December 9, 972) was a Japanese statesman, courtier, and waka poet who was active during the Heian period. Also known by his title Ichijō Sesshō and posthumously as Kentoku-kō, he was born into the influential Fujiwara clan. He climbed the ranks of the imperial court to become one of the most important political figures of his time. Known for being handsome, wise, and having a flamboyant personality, he stood out among his peers at court. He spent his entire political career in Kyoto, the imperial capital, where he passed away.

Before Fame

Koretada was born in 924 into the Fujiwara clan, the leading aristocratic family of the Heian period. The Fujiwaras had significant sway over the imperial court through strategic marriages and political appointments. Being born into this family set him on a path to prominence from the start, as Fujiwara men often held the highest state offices. The tenth-century Heian court valued literary and artistic skills as much as political power, and Koretada developed both. His poetic talent earned him a lasting spot in Japanese literary history, alongside his impressive political career.
