Biography

Fujiwara no Teishi (藤原 定子; 977 – January 13, 1001), known as Sadako, was the empress consort of Japanese Emperor Ichijō. She came from the influential Fujiwara family during the Heian period. Her father, Fujiwara no Michitaka, was the regent and Minister of the Center, and her mother was Takashina no Kishi. Her family's strong political influence at the imperial court put her at the heart of Japanese cultural and political life from a young age.

Before Fame

Teishi grew up in a wealthy and cultured setting, getting an education that matched her status as the daughter of a high-ranking Fujiwara regent. Her father, Fujiwara no Michitaka, had a lot of influence at Emperor Ichijō's court. Through his strategic moves, Teishi became part of the imperial household. She joined the court as a consort to Emperor Ichijō around 990, when she was about thirteen. This followed the Fujiwara tradition of positioning daughters close to the emperor to boost their clan's political power.
