Biography

Fumio Kishida, born on July 29, 1957, in Shibuya, Tokyo, is a Japanese politician and diplomat who served as Prime Minister of Japan and President of the Liberal Democratic Party from 2021 to 2024. Coming from a political family, Kishida spent part of his childhood in the United States, where he attended elementary school in New York City. This experience later influenced his international outlook as a diplomat and political leader. He went to Kojimachi Junior High School, Kaisei Senior High School, and Waseda University before starting his career in finance.

Following in his family's footsteps, Kishida entered politics and was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1993 as a member of the Liberal Democratic Party, representing Hiroshima 1st district, a position he has held since 1996. Early in his political career, he served as Minister of State for Special Missions under Prime Ministers Shinzo Abe and Yasuo Fukuda from 2007 to 2008. In 2012, he led the LDP's moderate Kōchikai faction after Makoto Koga's retirement, increasing his influence in the party until he left the faction in 2023.

Before becoming Prime Minister, Kishida's most notable role was as Minister for Foreign Affairs from 2012 to 2017 under Shinzo Abe's administration, making him the longest-serving Foreign Affairs Minister in Japanese history. During this time, he was key in Japan's diplomatic relations and international standing. He also briefly served as acting Minister of Defense in 2017 before leaving Abe's cabinet to chair the LDP Policy Research Council from 2017 to 2020, a move that set him up for future leadership.

After an unsuccessful attempt at LDP leadership in 2020, losing to Yoshihide Suga, Kishida won the party presidency in 2021, defeating Taro Kono in a second-round runoff. He was confirmed as Prime Minister by the National Diet on October 4, 2021. His administration focused on a "new model of capitalism" with policies aimed at redistributing wealth, increasing wages, and expanding the middle class. Kishida is married to Yuko Kishida and has received several international honors, including the Grand Cross of the Order of Orange-Nassau, the Profile in Courage Award in 2023, and the National Order of Merit in 2024.

Before Fame

Kishida was born into a politically connected family in Tokyo's Shibuya district. His early years in New York City, where he attended elementary school while his family was in the United States, gave him a broad perspective and language skills that benefited his diplomatic career. Back in Japan, he completed his education at well-regarded schools like Kaisei Senior High School and graduated from Waseda University.

Before stepping into politics, Kishida worked in finance, gaining business experience that shaped his economic policies later on. His political career took off when he was elected to the House of Representatives in 1993, representing Hiroshima's 1st district as a Liberal Democratic Party candidate, inspired by his family's political involvement.
