Biography

Garbiñe Muguruza Blanco was born on October 8, 1993, in Guatire, Venezuela, and later moved to Spain, where she grew her tennis career. With both Venezuelan and Spanish nationality, she played professionally for Spain and became one of the standout players of her era. She officially retired in April 2024 at 30, after more than a decade in the top tier of women's tennis.

Muguruza first gained significant attention at the 2012 Miami Open, reaching the fourth round as a teenager and defeating two top-ten players along the way. Her aggressive baseline style, featuring strong groundstrokes and a readiness to attack the net, made her a consistent contender on all surfaces. She kept improving and established herself in the top twenty before making her breakthrough in major tournaments.

In 2015, Muguruza reached her first Grand Slam final at Wimbledon, where Serena Williams defeated her. That same year, she won her first Premier-level title at the China Open and qualified for the WTA Finals, showing she was ready to compete for the sport's top awards. The next year changed everything for her: she won the 2016 French Open, defeating Serena Williams in the final to claim her first major title on the clay at Roland Garros. In 2017, she returned to Wimbledon and defeated Venus Williams in the final, securing her second Grand Slam singles title and reaching the world No. 1 ranking. She became the only player in history to defeat both Williams sisters in Grand Slam finals.

Muguruza made it to the final of the 2020 Australian Open, adding another runner-up finish to her record before finding more success at the 2021 WTA Finals, which she won to cap one of her most successful periods. Overall, she won ten WTA Tour singles titles in her career. She also excelled in doubles, winning five titles with her fellow Spaniard Carla Suárez Navarro, including a runner-up finish at the 2015 WTA Finals and a semifinal spot at the 2014 French Open.

After playing her last professional singles match in January 2023, Muguruza officially retired in April 2024. Her career was marked by consistent performance at the sport's top competitions and a game that mixed physical prowess with tactical aggression.

Before Fame

Muguruza was born in Guatire, Venezuela, and moved to Spain as a young child. She settled in Catalonia, where she started training in tennis at an early age. Growing up in Spain when the country had many top players, she had access to a competitive environment and excellent coaching, which helped her develop her groundstroke-heavy game for her professional career.

She turned professional in 2012 and quickly showed her potential at that year's Miami Open by defeating two top-ten opponents at just seventeen. Her rise through the rankings over the next three years was steady, as she gained experience on the WTA Tour and refined the aggressive style that would eventually take her to the top of the sport.
