Biography

Paolo Cesare Maldini, born on June 26, 1968, in Milan, Italy, is widely considered one of the greatest footballers of all time. The son of former AC Milan captain Cesare Maldini, Paolo followed in his father’s footsteps and became a legendary figure at the same club. He spent his entire 25-year professional career at AC Milan, starting primarily as a left-back before moving to centre-back later on. Staying with one club for his entire career made him a unique figure in modern football.

Maldini made his professional debut for AC Milan in 1985 at just 16 and soon became an essential player. He became team captain in 1997 and kept the role until retiring in 2009. During his career, he made 647 Serie A appearances, a record that held until 2020. His defensive skills, leadership, and technical ability made him crucial for both club and country. Known also as 'Il Capitano,' his leadership and conduct were admired on and off the field.

With AC Milan, Maldini won an extraordinary 26 trophies, including five UEFA Champions League titles, seven Serie A championships, and many other domestic and international honors. He shares the record for the most European Cup/UEFA Champions League final appearances, alongside Real Madrid's Paco Gento, with eight. His international career with Italy spanned 14 years from 1988 to 2002, during which he earned 126 caps and scored seven goals. He captained the national team for eight years and played in four FIFA World Cups and three UEFA European Championships, reaching the finals in both the 1994 World Cup and Euro 2000.

After retiring as a player in 2009 at the age of 41, AC Milan retired his number 3 shirt in his honor. Maldini moved into football administration, working as AC Milan's sporting director from 2018 to 2023. He also became a co-owner of Miami FC in the USL Championship. His marriage to Adriana Fossa and ongoing involvement in football through various roles have kept him connected to the sport that defined his life. His many individual honors include the Bravo Award in 1989, knighthood in the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, and being named in the Ballon d'Or Dream Team in 2020.

Before Fame

Paolo Maldini was born into a football-loving family. His father, Cesare Maldini, was a former AC Milan captain and Italy national team defender who later became a coach. Growing up in Milan, Paolo was surrounded by football from a young age and joined AC Milan's youth academy as a child. While his natural talent and family ties offered him great training opportunities, it was his hard work and skill that got him a first-team debut at just 16.

In the 1980s, Italian football was thriving, with Serie A becoming the world's top league. AC Milan was undergoing changes under new ownership and was set to become a powerhouse in European football. This setting was ideal for a young Maldini to become one of the game's top defenders, learning from seasoned teammates and playing at the top level from his teenage years.
