Biography

George Timothy Clooney was born on May 6, 1961, in Lexington, Kentucky, to Nick Clooney, a TV host and journalist, and Nina Bruce Warren. He went to Augusta High School and later studied broadcast journalism at Northern Kentucky University and the University of Cincinnati. He also trained at the Beverly Hills Playhouse, sharpening the skills that would eventually make him one of Hollywood's most famous actors. In the 1980s, he started his career with small TV roles, appearing on shows like The Facts of Life and Roseanne, before landing his big break.

Clooney's breakthrough came when he was cast as Dr. Doug Ross on the NBC medical drama ER in 1994, a role he held until 1999. The show became incredibly popular, and his performance earned him several Screen Actors Guild Awards as part of the ensemble cast, along with two nominations for Primetime Emmy Awards. His work on ER established him as a serious dramatic actor and opened the door to a major film career. He moved into movies with roles in From Dusk till Dawn (1996), Out of Sight (1998), and Three Kings (1999), showcasing his ability to handle different genres and tones.

His film career soared in the 2000s. He won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 2006 for playing a CIA officer in Syriana (2005) and won the Academy Award for Best Picture as a co-producer of Argo (2012). He received additional Oscar nominations for Michael Clayton (2007), Up in the Air (2009), and The Descendants (2011). Beyond acting, Clooney directed nine films, including Good Night, and Good Luck (2005), a well-received look at journalist Edward R. Murrow's clash with Senator Joseph McCarthy, and The Ides of March (2011), a political thriller that he also starred in.

Clooney married actress Talia Balsam in 1989; they divorced in 1993. He later married human rights lawyer Amal Alamuddin in 2014, and they have twins, Ella and Alexander, born in 2017. Outside of entertainment, Clooney co-founded Casamigos Tequila in 2013, and it was sold to Diageo in 2017 for up to one billion dollars, showing his business skills. He's also been a prominent political and humanitarian activist, especially concerning the Darfur conflict and global human rights issues.

Throughout his career, Clooney has received several honors, like the Cecil B. DeMille Award in 2015, the Honorary César in 2017, the AFI Life Achievement Award in 2018, and the Kennedy Center Honor in 2022. He made his Broadway debut in 2025, playing Edward R. Murrow in a stage adaptation of Good Night, and Good Luck, earning a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in a Play. His ability to move smoothly between acting, directing, producing, and business has made him one of the most versatile figures in American entertainment today.

Before Fame

George Clooney grew up in Kentucky in a family with deep ties to media and entertainment. His father, Nick Clooney, was a well-known TV journalist and host, and his aunt was the famous singer Rosemary Clooney. Growing up in a household familiar with performance and public life gave him an early look into the entertainment industry. He went to Augusta High School and later attended Northern Kentucky University and the University of Cincinnati, although he left without getting a degree to focus fully on acting.

When he moved to Los Angeles in the early 1980s, Clooney spent nearly a decade doing small TV parts and supporting roles, even living out of his car at one point. He took classes at the Beverly Hills Playhouse and grabbed any work he could find to build his résumé. His persistence gradually paid off with recurring roles on shows like The Facts of Life and Roseanne. However, it wasn't until he was cast in ER in 1994 that he became a household name.
