Biography
George Walker Bush (born July 6, 1946) is an American politician, businessman, and autobiographer who served as the 43rd President of the United States from 2001 to 2009. Born into the prominent Bush political dynasty in New Haven, Connecticut, he is the eldest son of George H.W. Bush, the 41st president. Bush's educational path included St. Anthony Catholic School, The Kinkaid School, Phillips Academy, and Yale College, where he was a member of Davenport College. He later earned a Master of Business Administration from Harvard Business School in 1975, making him the first U.S. president to hold an MBA degree.
After completing his education, Bush served as a pilot in the Texas Air National Guard during the Vietnam War era before entering the oil industry as a financier and businessman. His entrepreneurial ventures included founding Arbusto Energy and later Bush Exploration, though these companies faced mixed success. Bush transitioned into sports ownership as co-owner of the Texas Rangers baseball team from 1989 to 1998, a role that significantly raised his public profile in Texas. His political career began with his successful gubernatorial campaign in Texas in 1994, defeating incumbent Ann Richards to become governor, a position he held from 1995 to 2000.
Bush's presidency was defined by the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, which fundamentally reshaped American foreign and domestic policy. His administration launched the global War on Terror, including military interventions in Afghanistan and Iraq. Domestically, he implemented significant tax cuts, education reform through the No Child Left Behind Act, and established the Department of Homeland Security. His presidency concluded during the 2008 financial crisis, leaving office with historically low approval ratings.
Following his presidency, Bush has reinvented himself as a motivational speaker, painter, and author of multiple autobiographical works. His post-presidential activities have included painting portraits of world leaders and military veterans, pursuing what he describes as a therapeutic and artistic outlet. He has received numerous international honors, including the Grand Cross with Collar of the Order of the Three Stars from Latvia in 2005 and the Order of the Cross of Terra Mariana from Estonia in 2012. Bush married Laura Welch in 1977, and they have twin daughters, Jenna and Barbara, born in 1981.
Before Fame
Bush's early life was shaped by privilege and political connections through his father's rising career in Texas oil and politics. He attended elite preparatory institutions, including Phillips Academy in Massachusetts, before following family tradition to Yale University. During the Vietnam War, Bush served in the Texas Air National Guard from 1968 to 1974, training as a pilot on F-102 Delta Dagger interceptor aircraft, though he never saw combat overseas.
After Harvard Business School, Bush returned to Texas to establish himself independently in the oil business during the energy boom of the late 1970s. Despite family connections, his early ventures struggled financially, leading him to pivot toward baseball ownership and eventually politics. His marriage to librarian Laura Welch in 1977 provided stability, and his decision to quit drinking in 1986 marked a personal transformation that preceded his entry into public life.
