Biography

Giovanni Vincenzo Infantino was born on 23 March 1970 in Brig-Glis, Switzerland, to Italian immigrant parents. He has Italian, Swiss, and Lebanese citizenship. He attended the University of Fribourg and the University of Neuchâtel, where he studied law, which led to his career in sports administration and governance.

Infantino started in football administration at UEFA, overseeing European football, and eventually became General Secretary. He played a vital role in developing broadcasting and commercial agreements and gained valuable experience managing one of the world's leading football organizations. His work at UEFA set the stage for his successful campaign for the FIFA presidency.

After a corruption scandal led to Sepp Blatter's resignation as FIFA president, Infantino ran for the position and was elected on 26 February 2016. He defeated several candidates and was re-elected unopposed on 5 June 2019, and again on 16 March 2023, securing his long-term presidency. Since 10 January 2020, he has also been a part of the International Olympic Committee.

As FIFA president, Infantino oversaw the 2018 World Cup in Russia. After the tournament, he received the Order of Friendship medal from Russian President Vladimir Putin, which drew attention and criticism due to the political climate. He also led the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, which faced controversy over Qatar's human rights issues, especially regarding migrant workers. Infantino publicly defended or downplayed these concerns during the tournament.

Infantino has pursued major changes to football's global calendar and competition formats, including expanding the FIFA World Cup from 32 to 48 teams starting with the 2026 tournament. He was also key in choosing Saudi Arabia as the host for the 2034 World Cup, supporting a Saudi bid and overseeing changes to hosting eligibility that limited competing bids. These decisions have been scrutinized by human rights groups and some football organizations, while his supporters argue they expand football's reach globally.
