Biography
Aleksander Čeferin was born on October 13, 1967, in Ljubljana, which was part of socialist Yugoslavia and is now the capital of Slovenia. He studied law at the University of Ljubljana, where he gained the knowledge that would support his career in law and football administration. After graduating, he became a lawyer specializing in sports law, earning a reputation both in Slovenia and across Europe's sports circles. He is married to Barbara Čeferin.
Čeferin stepped into football governance in 2011 when he was elected president of the Football Association of Slovenia, a role he held until 2016. During this time, he focused on improving Slovenian football’s organization and gained valuable experience working with national associations and UEFA, Europe’s football governing body. His work in Slovenia made him a solid choice for a leadership role at the European level.
In September 2016, Čeferin was elected president of UEFA, following Michel Platini, who had been suspended due to an ethics investigation. Čeferin defeated Spanish football official Ángel María Villar at a UEFA Extraordinary Congress in Athens. His election aimed to bring back trust and stability to UEFA after a period of controversy. He was later re-elected, reinforcing his leadership within UEFA.
As UEFA president, Čeferin led important changes, including overhauling the UEFA Champions League format, set to be implemented in the 2024–25 season, increasing participating clubs and altering the group stage setup. He strongly opposed the proposed European Super League in 2021, where twelve big clubs planned a breakaway competition. Čeferin criticized the move, which quickly fell apart due to pressure from governing bodies, governments, and fans, leading most clubs to withdraw.
In recognition of his work, Čeferin received the Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise, 4th class, a Ukrainian honor. His journey from a national legal practice to leading one of the world's top sports organizations shows his combination of legal skills and leadership in European football.
Before Fame
Čeferin grew up in Ljubljana during socialist Yugoslavia, a time when organized sports were culturally and politically important across the Eastern Bloc and non-aligned nations. He matured as Yugoslavia was starting to face political tensions that eventually led to its breakup in the early 1990s, affecting Slovenia, which declared independence in 1991. During this time, Čeferin pursued a law degree at the University of Ljubljana, entering a profession that was adjusting to the demands of a newly independent, market-oriented democracy.
After establishing himself as a lawyer with expertise in sports law, Čeferin started building connections within Slovenian football administration. His legal training and interest in sports created a natural path into governance roles. His election as president of the Football Association of Slovenia in 2011 marked the merging of his legal career with his role as a sports official, setting the stage for his later rise to UEFA's presidency.
