Biography

George Andreas Papandreou, known as Giorgos to set him apart from his grandfather, was born on June 16, 1952, in Saint Paul, Minnesota, into a well-known Greek political family. His father was future Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou, and his grandfather was Prime Minister Georgios Papandreou. He had an extensive international education at several institutions, including King City Secondary School, Athens College, Amherst College, Harvard University, Stockholm University, and the London School of Economics and Political Science, where he studied sociology and political science.

Papandreou started his political career in the 1980s during his father's administration. He served as Minister for National Education and Religious Affairs from 1988-1989 and again from 1994-1996. His diplomatic experience grew when he served as Minister for Foreign Affairs under Prime Minister Costas Simitis from 1999 to 2004. This role brought him numerous international honors such as the Grand Cross of the Order of the Crown, Grand Cross of the Order of Isabella the Catholic, and the Grand Cross of the Order of the Lion of Finland.

After his father's death, Papandreou became the leader of the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) in February 2004 and was elected president of the Socialist International in 2006. These roles increased his recognition on both domestic and international levels. His most demanding role came when he became Greece's 182nd Prime Minister on October 6, 2009, facing a severe economic crisis during his time in office.

As Prime Minister during the Greek debt crisis from 2009 to 2011, Papandreou enforced strict austerity measures as required by international bailout agreements, leading to large public protests and political turmoil. His suggestion of a referendum on the bailout terms sparked controversy within EU leadership and led to his resignation on November 11, 2011, paving the way for a national unity government. After stepping down as PASOK leader in March 2012 and leaving the party in 2015, he founded the Movement of Democratic Socialists (KIDISO). This later became part of the Democratic Alignment, which evolved into the Movement for Change, through which he returned to Parliament in 2019 as an MP for Achaea.

Before Fame

Growing up in a well-known political family, Papandreou split his early years between Greece and North America, experiencing both Greek and American political cultures first-hand. When his father, Andreas Papandreou, was exiled during the military junta years (1967-1974), young Giorgos was educated abroad, attending schools in Canada and the United States before continuing his studies in Europe.

This international background shaped how he sees the world and gave him strong language skills, allowing him to comfortably navigate different cultural settings. He studied sociology and economics at top schools like Harvard and the London School of Economics, which gave him the tools that would later influence how he handled governance and international diplomacy. With both his family's political background and his own academic achievements, he was seen as a natural choice to continue the Papandreou legacy in Greek politics.
