Biography

Gukesh Dommaraju, born on May 29, 2006, is an Indian chess grandmaster and the current World Chess Champion. He made history by becoming the youngest undisputed world champion after beating Ding Liren in 2024 at just 18 years and 195 days old. Gukesh is known as one of the top chess prodigies of his generation, boasting numerous age-related records.

Gukesh started chess at the age of seven and quickly showed great potential. He became an International Master in March 2017 and achieved grandmaster status on January 15, 2019, at 12 years, 7 months, and 17 days old, making him the second-youngest grandmaster ever at that time, only behind Sergey Karjakin. He continued climbing the ranks, becoming the youngest player to exceed a FIDE rating of 2700 at 16 and later 2750 at 17.

During his junior career, Gukesh won many titles and awards in international competitions. He claimed the under-12 title at the 2018 World Youth Chess Championship and earned multiple gold medals at the 2018 Asian Youth Chess Championship. He also represented India in team events, winning team bronze and individual gold at the 44th Chess Olympiad in 2022, and both team and individual gold medals at the 45th Chess Olympiad in 2024.

In September 2023, Gukesh became India's top-rated chess player, ending Viswanathan Anand's 37-year reign in Indian chess ratings. This marked him as a new leading figure in Indian chess. His journey to the World Championship began with his win in the 2024 Candidates Tournament, where he became the youngest winner ever, allowing him to challenge then-champion Ding Liren. His victory in the World Chess Championship match established him as the 18th undisputed world champion and a key player in today's chess world. Educated at Velammal Educational Trust, he was awarded the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award in 2024, India's highest sports honor.

Before Fame

Growing up in Chennai, Gukesh started playing chess at seven and quickly found he had a knack for the game's strategies. During his early years, Indian chess was booming, thanks to the groundwork laid by five-time World Champion Viswanathan Anand. By the 2010s, India had much better chess resources, with improved training facilities, coaching programs, and more support for young players.

Gukesh's early chess years happened during the rise of digital tools in chess training and analysis, giving young players access to powerful computer engines and lots of game databases. This tech edge, along with India's growing chess scene and his education at Velammal Educational Trust, gave him the perfect conditions to hone his exceptional talent. His quick rise through youth championships and ratings made it clear early on that he had the potential to compete at the highest levels of international chess.
