Before Fame

Richard Carapaz grew up in El Carmelo, a small town in Ecuador's Carchi Province near the Colombian border. The mountainous terrain of his home region provided the perfect natural training conditions that later helped his climbing abilities in professional cycling. During his youth, Ecuador didn't have much cycling infrastructure, making his journey to international competition particularly difficult.

In the early 2010s, South American cyclists began making bigger impacts in European professional cycling. Colombian riders had already established themselves in the sport, paving the way and inspiring cyclists from nearby countries. Carapaz entered professional cycling during this time of growing opportunities for Latin American riders to compete at the sport's highest levels.
