Biography
Hamzah bin Al-Hussein, born on March 29, 1980, in Amman, Jordan, is King Hussein's fourth son and the first child of his American-born fourth wife, Queen Noor. As part of the Hashemite family, which has ruled Jordan since 1921, Hamzah has deep historical and religious roots, being a 41st-generation descendant of the Prophet Muhammad. His birth put him in the heart of Jordanian royalty when his father, King Hussein, was a notable and long-serving leader in the Middle East.
After King Hussein's death on February 7, 1999, Hamzah was named Crown Prince of Jordan, following his father's wishes. When his older half-brother, Abdullah II, became king, he initially maintained this arrangement but stripped Hamzah of the title on November 28, 2004. He wanted Hamzah to focus on his duties without the pressures of the title. This move changed the royal succession line and caught international attention.
Hamzah has an elite education from various countries. He went to Harrow School in England, a top boarding school, then received military training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, a route familiar to Arab royals. He later studied at Harvard University in the U.S., building his academic background. He is married to Princess Noor bint Asem Al-Hashem and Princess Basmah Bani Ahmad.
In April 2021, Hamzah was at the center of a political crisis in Jordan after being accused of planning to destabilize the country. He was reportedly put under house arrest, and senior figures, including a former royal court chief, were detained over the alleged plot. Hamzah denied involvement, releasing a video criticizing the government's leadership. This was one of the most public family disputes in recent history.
The crisis was later resolved through mediation by senior Hashemite family members, and Hamzah signed a letter promising loyalty to King Abdullah II. However, in April 2022, Hamzah officially gave up his princely title, saying it no longer matched his values. This move closed a difficult chapter in his life, leaving his future role in Jordanian society and politics uncertain.
Before Fame
Hamzah bin Al-Hussein grew up in the royal court of Amman when Jordan was dealing with regional challenges, such as the aftermath of the Gulf War and the continuing Israeli-Palestinian conflict. His father, King Hussein, was well-known as a skilled diplomat, and Hamzah learned about Hashemite history and leadership responsibilities in this setting.
He received his early education at Harrow School in England and then trained at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, both of which have shaped many leaders from the Arab world and the British Commonwealth. These experiences provided him with military discipline and introduced him to international power and governance. His later studies at Harvard University further prepared him for public duties, leading to his appointment as Crown Prince at eighteen after his father's death in 1999.
