Biography
Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, born March 29, 1944, in Accra, Ghana, was Ghana's 13th President from January 2017 to January 2025. He trained as a lawyer, studying at Holmewood House School, Lancing College, the University of Ghana, New College at Oxford, and City, University of London. Before becoming president, Akufo-Addo held key ministerial roles in President John Kufuor's administration, serving as Attorney General from 2001 to 2003 and as Minister for Foreign Affairs from 2003 to 2007.
Akufo-Addo's journey to the presidency showed determination and political toughness. As the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, he ran for president in 2008 and 2012 but lost to John Evans Atta Mills and John Dramani Mahama, respectively. After losing in 2012, he contested the election results in court, though the Supreme Court of Ghana upheld Mahama's win. His third run for president in 2016 was successful, beating incumbent President Mahama with 53.85% of the vote. He became the first opposition candidate in Ghana to unseat an incumbent president with a majority in the first round.
As president, Akufo-Addo initially gained strong public support with his "Ghana Beyond Aid" agenda, aiming for economic independence and less reliance on foreign help. He won re-election in 2020, again defeating Mahama with 51.59% of the vote. However, his second term faced serious economic problems, with inflation reaching 40% in 2022 and 2023, marking Ghana's worst financial crisis in a generation. His administration blamed external factors like the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russian invasion of Ukraine, but critics highlighted fiscal mismanagement as a cause.
Throughout his career, Akufo-Addo was a key figure in African politics and international diplomacy. His experience as a human rights lawyer shaped his political approach, especially during Ghana's transition to democracy in the 1990s. He received many international awards, including the Order of the Volta in 2008, several orders from African countries, and the Mother Teresa Awards in 2016. Due to constitutional term limits, he peacefully handed over power to John Dramani Mahama and the National Democratic Congress on January 7, 2025, after the NPP lost the election.
Before Fame
Akufo-Addo was born in Ghana during the last years of British rule and had a privileged education that took him from local schools to acclaimed institutions abroad. His early years lined up with Ghana's independence in 1957 and the political changes that marked the country's early decades. Studying in both Ghana and Britain gave him a unique view on governance and international relations, which later influenced his political career.
Akufo-Addo first gained attention as a human rights lawyer during Ghana's move from military rule to democracy in the 1990s. His legal skills and strong support for democratic values made him an important figure during this pivotal time in Ghana's politics. His work in pro-democracy circles and legal practice laid the groundwork for his later political pursuits, linking him with the people and organizations that would eventually back his rise in the New Patriotic Party.
