Biography

Hrithik Roshan, born Hritik Rakesh Nagrath on January 10, 1974, in Juhu, Mumbai, grew up in a family deeply involved in the Hindi film industry, being the son of filmmaker Rakesh Roshan. He studied at Sydenham College in Mumbai, where he explored interests beyond academics while getting ready for his future in cinema. He gained early insights into filmmaking through his father's work.

Roshan started his film career with brief roles as a child actor in several 1980s films, eventually working as an assistant director on four of his father's projects. This experience was crucial when he debuted as a lead actor in 2000 with Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai, which was a huge box office hit and made him a promising newcomer. He followed this with notable performances in Fiza (2000) and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001), though he then faced several box office failures that challenged his early success.

In 2003, the science fiction film Koi... Mil Gaya turned things around for Roshan, earning him critical acclaim and two Filmfare Awards. This success led to the Krrish superhero franchise, with sequels in 2006 and 2013, making him one of Bollywood's top stars. He showed his range as an actor with roles like an army officer in Lakshya (2004), a master thief in Dhoom 2 (2006), Mughal emperor Akbar in Jodhaa Akbar (2008), and a quadriplegic in Guzaarish (2010).

Throughout the 2010s and beyond, Roshan continued to show his versatility with hits like Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011), the revenge drama Agneepath (2012), and the biographical film Super 30 (2019). His work with director Siddharth Anand on action films like Bang Bang! (2014), War (2019), and Fighter (2024) confirmed his status as an action star. Beyond movies, Roshan appeared on television as a judge on the dance reality show Just Dance (2011), becoming the highest-paid film star on Indian TV at that time. He was married to Sussanne Khan and has won six Filmfare Awards, with four for Best Actor, scoring wins in 2001 and 2004.

Before Fame

Growing up in Juhu as the son of filmmaker Rakesh Roshan, Hrithik was surrounded by the film industry from a young age. Despite this, he faced personal challenges like a speech impediment that needed therapy. During his early years, he gained hands-on experience in filmmaking by working as an assistant director on his father's projects, learning both the technical and creative sides of cinema.

In the late 1990s, Bollywood was changing with new ways of storytelling and better production quality, creating chances for new talent. To prepare for stardom, Roshan underwent intensive training in dance and physical fitness, skills that would become his trademark. His debut in Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai was made by his father to highlight these skills, launching him at a time when Bollywood was moving toward more polished, internationally appealing films.
