Biography

Christian Atsu Twasam (10 January 1992 – 6 February 2023) was a Ghanaian professional footballer known for playing primarily as a winger but also as an attacking midfielder and left back. Born in Ada Foah, Ghana, Atsu became one of his country's standout football exports and earned 65 caps for the national team between 2012 and 2019. He began his professional career at Portuguese club Porto, where he honed his skills and drew the attention of major European clubs.

In 2013, Chelsea signed Atsu for £3.5 million, marking a key move in his career. However, his time at Stamford Bridge involved several loan spells across Europe. He played for Vitesse in the Netherlands, Everton and Bournemouth in England, and Málaga in Spain, gaining experience in various leagues and playing styles. These moves helped him refine his skills and establish himself as a versatile attacking player known for his speed and crossing ability.

Atsu's most stable period was with Newcastle United. He joined on loan for the 2016-17 season and completed a permanent move in May 2017. At Newcastle, he found regular playing time and became a fan favorite, contributing to the team in both the Championship and Premier League. His four-year contract with the Magpies was the longest he spent at any club during his European career.

After leaving Newcastle in 2021, Atsu continued his career in Saudi Arabia with Al Raed before joining Turkish club Hatayspor. His international career was significant as well, with appearances at the 2014 FIFA World Cup and four Africa Cup of Nations tournaments. His best international moment came at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, where he won Player of the Tournament and Goal of the Tournament while helping Ghana reach the final. Atsu's life was tragically cut short at age 31 when he died in the devastating Turkey-Syria earthquake on 6 February 2023, while playing for Hatayspor in Antakya.

Before Fame

Growing up in Ada Foah, a coastal town in Ghana's Greater Accra Region, Atsu came from humble beginnings to chase his football dreams. He developed during a time when Ghanaian football was gaining more international attention, thanks to players like Michael Essien and Sulley Muntari who opened doors for talented players to join European leagues.

Atsu's rise began when he joined Porto's youth system, following a path that many promising African players took to European football. Portugal's ties with African countries and Porto's skill in nurturing young talent made it a great starting point for aspiring players from Ghana and other West African countries during the early 2010s.
