Biography
Ikhtiyor Navruzov was born on July 5, 1989, in Bukhara, Uzbekistan. He grew into one of Uzbekistan's most reliable international freestyle wrestlers, mainly competing in the 65–74 kg weight classes throughout his career. His skills and long-lasting competitive edge helped him earn medals over more than ten years, representing Uzbekistan at continental and global championships.
Navruzov's most significant appearance on the world stage was at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, where he competed in the 66 kg freestyle wrestling event. In the quarter-finals, he faced India's Sushil Kumar, one of the most successful wrestlers of his time and a two-time Olympic medalist. Navruzov lost to Kumar and did not progress to the medal rounds, but just competing at the Games was a major career milestone and established him as an international-level wrestler.
Over the years, Navruzov built an impressive record at the Asian Wrestling Championships. He won bronze medals in 2010 in New Delhi and in 2021 in Almaty. He also took silver medals in the 2011 championships in Tashkent and the 2017 championships in New Delhi, and he achieved a gold medal at the 2018 championships in Bishkek. This collection of five Asian Championship medals over eleven years shows the consistency and resilience he brought to competition at the continental level.
Navruzov reached the height of his international career at the 2015 World Wrestling Championships, competing in the 65 kg category and winning a silver medal. This placed him among the top wrestlers in his weight class worldwide and is the highlight of his competitive record. Finishing as a world championship runner-up is a notable achievement and showcased his ability to perform at the sport's highest levels.
Throughout his career, Navruzov represented Uzbekistan during a time when the country was gaining ground in international wrestling. His ability to compete and win medals over such a long period, adjusting to weight class changes and the evolving competitive scene, shows his commitment to the sport. He remains one of the most accomplished Uzbek freestyle wrestlers of his time at both the Asian and global levels.
Before Fame
Ikhtiyor Navruzov grew up in Bukhara, one of Uzbekistan's historic cities, during the post-Soviet era when the country was building its own sports programs separate from the former USSR system. Wrestling has a long history in Central Asia, and Uzbekistan began investing in the sport after independence, creating opportunities for young athletes to develop through national programs and academies.
Navruzov came of age as a wrestler during the 2000s, a time when Uzbekistan was actively assembling competitive teams for international freestyle wrestling events. His progress through local competitions and regional tournaments paved the way for his entry onto the Asian and global scenes, with his first significant international results appearing around 2010 when he won a bronze medal at the Asian Wrestling Championships in New Delhi.
